Due to the resignation of a Board of Education member, effective December 31, 2024, the Old Tappan Board
of Education has a vacancy. This vacancy will be filled by an appointment made by the members of the Board
at a public meeting on December 9, 2024 beginning at 8:00 p.m.
The process for filling a vacancy differs from a typical school board election. The person appointed by the
Board will become a full member of the Board and serve in that position until the reorganization meeting in
January, 2026.
In order to be considered for this appointment, interested candidates must submit a letter of interest, resume,
and any other available information indicating their qualifications.

The deadline for receiving materials is Friday, November 8, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.
Interviews with candidates for the vacancy will be conducted by the Board of Education in Executive Session
on Monday, November 11, 2024 beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. Each applicant will be a specific
appointment time and will be interviewed separately. After all interviews are completed, the Board will
deliberate.
At the December 9, 2024 Board of Education Meeting, the Board will make a nomination(s) to fill the vacancy
and then vote to appoint one of the candidates. The candidate, with a majority vote of the members of the
Board, will take the oath of office and be seated at the January 6, 2025 Reorganization Meeting.
The person selected to fill the vacancy will have to undergo a full criminal background check within 30 days of
appointment.
Legal qualifications (pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:12-1):
▪ Be a United States citizen;
▪ Be at least 18 years of age;
▪ Be a resident of Old Tappan for at least one (1) year at the time of election or appointment;
▪ Be able to read and write;
▪ Be a registered voter in the district;
▪ Not be disqualified as a voter pursuant to N.J.S.A. 19:4-1;
▪ Not have been convicted of any of the crimes or offenses enumerated in N.J.S.A. 18A;12-1 or
conspiracy to commit or attempt to commit any of said crimes;
