Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
Today,
you may have read on social media that there was a Grade 8 Language
Arts bulletin board at CDW that displayed student work containing images
of burning or ripped American flags. Please be assured that, as a
District, we would never condone the desecration of our American flag on
any day of the year, especially on Flag Day.
On
the backsides of the displayed images, there were explanations of
various propaganda techniques the students had learned about in class
and how these techniques were used to persuade people not to think for
themselves. Unfortunately, the explanations on the backsides of these
images were not visible nor was there an explanation of the display.
This activity was a springboard into a reading about the Holocaust.
To cure concerns, the display was immediately dismantled.
At
the conclusion of the school day, Ms. Santa, the middle school
principal, reminded the student body about the importance of our
American flag and the value it holds for all of us as Americans.
As
always, thank you for your constant support of our work. It is because
of our reciprocal trust and understanding that our District remains
strong.
Respectfully,
Danielle M. Da Giau, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
Old Tappan Public School District
